Laptops Taking Over In The Bedroom Department

A recent survey by Credent Technologies has revealed that rather a lot of us are taking our laptops to bed at night, to work of course, and that our regular partners are let’s say, not too happy about it, with over half of them claiming it is a “very annoying habit”. Hey they should be grateful, I can think of quite a few habits that are a lot worse than that.

Apparently as much as a quarter of the population of the UK are working away on their laptops whilst tucked up under the duvet and if it isn’t their laptop it’s their mobile. More than half claim that they are downloading and uploading essential information relating to their work.

Wait a minute though; I just wonder how many are playing on their laptops in bed whilst pretending to work. I mean I’m sure it wouldn’t go down too well in any relationship if you whisper to your partner in your most dulcet of tones, “not tonight darling because I’m twittering away to other tweeple in twitterville”. Or worse, what about porn? Nope, survey didn’t mention that one.

Yep, sounds much better and you’re much more likely to get away with it if say you are working. I mean who’s going to admit otherwise?

Ok to be fair the samples used were 329 London workers and not a cross section of the UK but would other regions fare any different. Who knows but I doubt it. The indications are that we are actually choosing to ‘work’ in bed instead of paying attention to our beloveds.

Vice President at Credant Technologies Michael Callahan said, “This survey confirms that there is a growing population that is no longer restricted by working hours or confined to the office building itself. People are mobile and will work anywhere – even in bed”.

Around 8% of those surveyed also said they spend more time on their mobiles during the evening than actually talking to their partner. Hmm do think texting each other would count as a conversation? Must try that!

At least the displaced partners can be thankful for something; 96% of the respondents said that the last thing they do before going to sleep was kiss their partners good night. That must make it ok then.

Sadly, the other 4%, the majority of which were male of course, prefer to finish off work and check their emails before switching off the light.

What do you think? Have we taken mobile computing a bit too far, and are you one of the guilty ones?
