Laptop, Work it Baby ! Imagine Walking In To Work With This Little Beauty !
If you plan on using your laptop for work related purposes, it goes without saying that you’ll want one geared towards whatever your particular line of work is. You can do just about anything with a laptop these days, but most people working a laptop will fall, roughly, into one (or a few) of the following categories…
Visual Media
If you’re looking for a laptop to do visual media work on, it should be obvious what you’re after: Lots of RAM, lots of HD space, and a nice big 24 million color LCD screen. Look for something that will be compatible with your favourite photo and video editing software, as well.
Sound
Laptops have never been the greatest tool for creating professional sound, unless backed up by more powerful equipment. Still, you can do a lot of basic, surprisingly nice sounding stuff on any laptop with a good sound card, just don’t expect the tiny laptop speakers to really give high quality music.
Writing
If your business is primarily writing, filling out spreadsheets, etcetera, just about any decent laptop will do. Just look for something with a decent screen and plenty of hard drive space.
Programming
If you’re developing software or video games, honestly, a laptop might not be your best choice. If you’re trying to create a top of the line computer game or something, most laptops don’t really have the power. If your needs are more modest than that, though, just look for a lot of RAM and HD space.
Anyways, no matter what you need your laptop to accomplish, there are a couple of things you’ll want to consider, regardless of your career.
Wireless Connectivity
You can pick up free internet at plenty of hotspots these days, but only if your laptop is actually equipped for Wi-Fi or Bluetooth wireless. Most laptops actually come standard with Bluetooth adapters built right in.
Battery Life
If you travel for work, or if you like to get work done down at your favourite coffee shop, or if you just can’t be at home working all day, you’ll want a long battery life. You might actually want to sacrifice a backlit screen for the sake of longer battery life, as backlighting tends to be a real energy hog. Attachable laptop lights, on the other hand, use up very little energy and can be plugged right into a USB port.
