Laptop to TV

Laptop to TV connections allows you to watch media contained on your laptop through your television set. Fantastic if you want to make use of a larger viewing screen to watch movies, play games, look at a slide show or power point presentation and is particularly convenient if there is an audience.

Connecting a laptop to TV sounds as though it could be difficult but it really isn’t if you know what to do, however, there are several different ways you can do it depending on your particular laptop and TV.

Probably the easiest and the cheapest way to connect your laptop to TV is via an S-Cable as all you have to do is plug one end into your laptop and one end into your TV. This is a video cable that has either 4 or 7 pins so check the connections on your laptop and TV first as most laptops have 7 pin connections whereas some TV’s only have 4.

Purchasing a VGA Scan converter, which comes with all the connections, will enable you to connect TV to laptop by converting VGA to Composite RCA or S Video via a connection from the back of the converter to the back of the TV. This method has the added advantage of allowing you to use your laptop and view media on a television set even if you are abroad.

If you have an HDTV television then you have a few more options available. You can connect laptop to TV using a Digital Visual Interface or DVI; in this case ensure that your laptop has a DVI connection first. You could also connect your laptop to TV using a 15 pin VGA cable. Another option would be to purchase a DVI to HDMI cable and connect your laptop to TV that way.

Troubleshooting

If you are having difficulty getting a picture and you have checked that the connections are correct and that they are properly inserted, you may find that the following will help:

  • Changing the screen resolution on your laptop to a lower setting
  • Altering the colour scheme settings on your laptop
  • Changing the aspect ratio setting on your TV
  • Also check that you are on the right channel on your TV

Finally, some laptops have an “fn” function key enabling you to switch to an external monitor without adjusting your windows settings so check that first.
