Q) What’s the easiest way to avoid laptop glare?
A) Sit somewhere else!
Okay but seriously, folks! There are easy ways to get rid of that obnoxious glare on your laptop screen that don’t involve asking someone else to trade seats with you! Not to mention, there are times when you’ll get a glare no matter where you sit, like if you’re outdoors on a sunny day, riding in the car, etcetera.
Adjusting your Screen
The first, and cheapest solution to laptop screen glare is to simply adjust your screen settings. Try increasing brightness, or adjusting the position of your screen. Vertical screens tend to be a lot easier to see, and catch less ambient light, than if you have your laptop at an angle.
On many laptops, adjusting brightness on your screen will also adjust your brightness settings on photo editing programs! Make sure to keep this in mind. If you’re going to be doing any visual media editing, try to do it in an area with very little ambient light to bounce off your screen.
Light Shields
You can buy some fairly inexpensive light shields to put on top of your screen to block ambient light. If you’re real cheap, though, you can always just duct tape a piece of cardboard to the top of your screen! These will be a little cumbersome, though. You can’t close your laptop without removing the shield, and you might not want to drag a big plastic baseball cap looking thing around with you everywhere. Besides which, they look kind of silly!
Anti-Glare Filters
Now we’re getting into the really effective stuff! There are a lot of anti-glare filters available from computer equipment sites, so you can basically take your pick. However, they might cost anywhere from thirty to one hundred bucks. Still, they do tend to be very effective at preventing screen glare, and might just prove priceless if you like to take your laptop with you everywhere.
As an added bonus, most anti-glare filters double as privacy filters, preventing looky loos from peeking over your shoulder and memorizing your passwords and so on.
There are a few different varieties of filter. The most convenient would be the self-adhesive variety. These ones stick, easily, to your laptop screen, and are slim enough that you can close your laptop with the filter still attached.
Don’t worry about compatibility. It’s not like a Sony filter won’t work on an Apple laptop or anything… just make sure to find an anti-glare filter that fits your screen.
