When Kohjinsha showed off their dual screen Netbook at CEATEC 2009 in Japan last month, everyone believed it to be just a concept design but now we find out it was much nearer to being a reality than anyone realised at the time.
The bizarre looking double screened Netbook is all set to go on sale in Japan next month with early buyers taking delivery of their new Netbook under the name Kohjinsha DZ from 11th December.
The company are taking pre orders now at a cost of around $920.
Ok so the Kohjinsha DZ Netbook looks a bit odd but we’d get used to that. It comes with two 10.1 inch LCD screens that slide together to make transporting the thing easier, with each screen having s a resolution of 1024 x 600. The screens rotate too, all the way round so they can face backwards.
The Netbook runs on a 1.6GHz AMD Athlon Neo MV-40 processor with S780MN chipset and ATI Radeon HD 3200 integrated graphics.
It comes with standard 1GB RAM with support for up to 4GB, 160GB Hard Drive, Windows 7 Home Premium operating system, and of course USB ports, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Ethernet for connectivity. There’s also a fingerprint scanner built into the right screen bezel.
The battery is a standard six cell battery that will apparently offer around four and a half hours usage although whether that is with one or two screens in use is not clear. Yes you will be able to turn on and use only one screen if you wish.
It weighs in at slightly more than a Netbook normally would at 1.84 Kg but then again, there’s the extra screen to consider.
Kohjinsha is a Japanese company that specialise in designs of sub notebooks or Ultra Mobile Personal Computers.
According to market information from BCN Kohjinsha is the market leader in Japan for computers with smaller screen sizes, namely screens that are less than 11 inches. Outside of Japan they are best known for the SA1F00 UMPC.
The Kohjinsha DZ could do very well in Japan, a country that loves electronic gadgets and gizmos but we’ll have to wait and see.
Now although Japanese buyers can get their hands on one of these from next month, we’ve no idea how long the rest of us will have to wait.
