Sony Ericsson have just announced that their first Android based SmartPhone, the Xperia X10, will be available in Japan this coming April through Japan’s largest mobile carrier, NTT DoCoMo.
“Our Xperia phone is the outcome of a successful global R&D effort, including our team in Tokyo that led the product development” said Bert Nordberg, president of Sony Ericsson at a news conference in Tokyo
“DoCoMo will be our first customer globally to receive the phone.”
The Xperia X10 SmartPhone has 4 inch touch screen display at 480 x 854 pixels WVGA and includes a decent 8 Megapixel camera with features such as auto focus, LED flash, Touch focus, image stabilization, geo-tagging, face and smile detection.
It’s a pretty fast phone too thanks to the powerful Qualcomm QSD8250 Snapdragon 1 GHz processor, and these days it’s all about speed.
The phone also has inbuilt GPS with WISEPILOT for navigation. For connectivity you get HSPA, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
There are also two of Sony’s own applications which have been added to the Android based phone. Check this out.
Sony Ericsson Mediascape stores all your photos, music, and videos in one convenient place but apart from that an interesting feature here is the face recognition for photos.
The device will recognize up to 5 faces in your contacts from your camera shots and will automatically store them under the appropriate contact.
You can tag a photo and the device will scan through every other photo in the album and provided 75 percent of a face is captured on a photo, it will also tag those it recognizes as the same person. Like it!
Then there’s Sony Ericsson Timescape which organises all your communications in one place in chronological order including emails, texts, or calls and even social networking site updates.
The Xperia X10, which will be available in black or white, measures 119 x 63 x 13.1mm and weighs 139 grams.
Apparently you can expect to get around 290 minutes of talk time on 3G and 270 on GSM Networks.
We have no idea at the moment what the Xperia X10 is likely to cost but I wouldn’t mind betting that it won’t come cheap.
Unfortunately there are no release dates for the Xperia X10 for the rest of the world as yet so I guess we’ll all just have to wait.
