Net Applications, the traffic monitoring firm based in California, have just released their latest statistics on mobile phone browsing and guess who’s out in front? The figures show that iPhone is definitely leading the way with 66.44% of the mobile browsing market. No surprises there.

The next in line is Java ME with 9.11% and Windows Mobile with 6.90%. The rest of them in the rankings are Android with 6.26%, Symbian 6.17%, Palm 2.37%, BlackBerry 2.24% and BREW with 0.51%.

So as we would expect, iPhone is way out in front with the lion’s share of the market. Interestingly, the month over month figures actually show that iPhone’s overall share is smaller than it was but does this mean anything? No it doesn’t.

The Net Applications report said “This does not mean that iPhone web browsing is shrinking, because the overall market is growing rapidly”.

We might want to keep an eye on Android and BlackBerry though as they are growing by the day. Take Google’s Android for example who has only been on the go for five months but already it has jumped up to 4th place.

“Although the iPhone has a commanding lead in mobile browsing share, Android and BlackBerry are rapidly gaining,” said Net Applications, who also estimate that over the past month mobile phone browsing rose from 0.69% to 0.725 out of all types of browsing.

So basically, mobile browsing is becoming more popular as more and more of us turn to our SmartPhones to access the web and this trend is only going to continue. In only 2 years time, mobile phones are expected to be the most popular way to browse the Internet, overtaking the PC.

So what about search engine dominance on mobiles?

Google is the leader in that department although we all knew that too didn’t we. In case you didn’t know, Google is even more dominant in mobile searches than on desktop computers.

Last month Google handled 97.5% of all SmartPhone searches putting them right at the top of the charts according to Net Applications. Yahoo is next with just over 2% and Ask, MSN, AltaVista, AOL and Microsoft Live Search follow miserably behind sharing less than 0.5% collectively.

One to watch though is Microsoft Live Search as they have partnered with Verizon to make Live Search the default search engine on all the Verizon devices in the coming months but whether this will make any difference to their overall ratings remains to be seen.
