UK based Mobile phone maker INQ Mobile has just revealed that it plans to launch a “Twitter” phone this year and cash in on the Christmas sales as well as the surge in growth of the micro blogging site.
Frank Meehan, Chief Executive of INQ Mobile told Reuters that the new phone would come with an Internet based Twitter Client that will make use of Internet connections for sending Tweets to Twitter and not text messages as in Twitter’s own system, and would cost operators less than $140.
Tweets are the name given for the maximum140 characters Twitterers use to send their messages to the site.
“This can really help open up and drive Twitter use on mobile when usage becomes part of your data package like on the PC,” he said.
And it makes sense. There’s no doubt that Twitter has seen phenomenal growth in recent months helped along by big names like Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher in the US and Stephen Fry in the UK as well as many others have become serial Twitterers since the site began just two years ago.
INQ know what they’re talking about. Their award winning INQ1 phone, which many have named the Facebook phone, has already seen significant success with Facebook users as the phone offers them the ability to integrate address books avoiding the need for separate logins.
The phone won the award for best handset at the Mobile World Congress Trade Show in Barcelona in February and according to UK operator ‘3’, INQ1’s traffic can be compared to the iPhone.
“INQ Mobile was the first to offer an affordable handset that appeals to the connected generation that wants instant access to web services such as Facebook and Skype,” said Ben Wood, research director at consultancy CCS Insight.
“Other manufacturers are also jumping on the social mobile bandwagon and INQ Mobile needs to exploit its agility to stay one step ahead as it looks to ink deals with more operators,” Wood said.
Messaging on Social Networking sites like Twitter, Facebook and MySpace are no longer restricted to sitting at a computer and typing on a keyboard, people like to be connected wherever they are even when on the bus, at work, or sitting in a café.
Yep, we’re in the middle of a technology war and Mobile phone producers need to keep up with the demand for ever more conveniently tailored services if they want to continue to stay in the game.
