Laptops have got to be one of the best inventions of the last thirty years. Who’s with me on this one? You can keep in touch with friends across the world no matter where you are, you can play all your games, watch a full season of House M.D., or (groan) file your taxes no matter where you are. You can sit around with your laptop while hanging out with friends at the coffee shop and pretend to be a genius just by keeping wikipedia open and always having something to add to every conversation.

The problem is that, if you want the best performance, you usually kind of have to accept the fact that you’re going to have to spend a pretty penny. It seems that the very best laptops available are luxuries preserved only for the richest people in the world.

Not so fast! You have a lot of options for getting great laptops at a lower price. Through discounts, sales, and refurbished second hand laptops, it really isn’t that hard at all, as long as you know the right tricks…

Here’s all you need to keep in mind if you’re looking to score a great laptop for cheap…

Know what you want

You’re not going to know a good deal when you see one unless you know what you want a good deal on in the first place. Make a short list of what you want from your laptop, and look for a laptop that either already has those capabilities, or one that can be easily upgraded to have them.

Settle on a lower end computer, and then upgrade

Think about it, you can either get the thirteen hundred dollar laptop, or you can get the five hundred dollar laptop, throw in about a hundred bucks worth of upgrades, and have a thirteen hundred dollar laptop for six hundred dollars. It’s simple. If you’re handy with a screwdriver, you can attach any new components you like in a matter of second.

Don’t be suckered by a low price

You want to settle for a lower end computer, but you also want to make sure that you’re getting what you paid for, and are starting out with a great jumping off point to eventually upgrade into your dream rig. Don’t let a low price trick you into buying something you don’t need.

It can be a bit of a minefield, but as long as you exercise a little common sense, it’s not hard to find a great laptop for half of what you were expecting to pay.
