IBM Launches State Of The Art Wimbledon Application For SmartPhone

Wimbledon season is upon us once again but this year spectators with a T Mobile G1 SmartPhone are in for a special treat regarding the way they keep up with the tournament.

Thanks to the new application developed by IBM, users can view comments from players and commentators, access real time statistics regarding current games as well as information about previous games and other information about the entire tournament in general.

“It’s about visualising data in a different way,” said Alan Flack, IBM’s Client Executive for the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC), in an interview.

“The trial needs to be fun to improve the experience people have at the tournament…by exploring new technologies, we can bring information to life by making it useful, engaging and accessible.”

The new application could completely transform the way that we keep up with the action at sporting events in future.

“These smart applications were designed with tennis fans in mind and add a whole new dimension to the event,” said Rob McCowen, Marketing director at the AELTC a statement.

The application runs on Seer Android operating system and as it is “location aware” if you point the G1 SmartPhone and scan around your environment you will be fed a constant stream of information such as number of the court you are looking at, other matches that have been played already, how far away it is, and so on.

The entire Wimbledon site has been plotted down to the last detail using GPS and a digital compass so basically the phone knows where you are located and will bring up information about whatever you are pointing it at.

If you want to know how far away the toilets are or even what is on the menu at the café, you can find out simply by pointing your phone.

Alan Flack, IBM client executive for the All England Lawn Tennis Club, said, “IBM recognizes that people come to Wimbledon to watch tennis, so anything we can do to help make their day smoother, to help them find what they are looking for quickly and efficiently, just makes their visit more enjoyable.”

Currently it is being trialled only on the G1 but if you don’t have a G1 phone you will still be able to download tweets from the social networking micro-blogging site Twitter giving you real time information about the tournament which kicks off today.
