So your laptop is suddenly running in slow motion, opening up adult websites at work, it’s unresponsive, and it’s basically just acting stupid. You don’t want to waste any time and screw around, you just need an antivirus program, right now, to get all this nasty junk off of your computer.

Go with Avira AntiVir. Follow the link, download it, install it, run a scan, and get rid of all those nasty viruses.

It’s free, easy to use, and probably the very best of the free antivirus programs. It keeps you up to date with at least one update every single day, expanding the already massive database of known viruses, Trojans, an worms. What’s more, it runs in real time and can spot any incoming viruses.

AntiVir is great, but in the end, it is still just a free virus killer. For being free, it’s surprisingly effective, but it does tend to be lacking in a few areas. All it really does is handle viruses. It won’t put up a firewall, it won’t cover you for spam and pop ups, it’s just there to kill viruses.

And it’s excellent at killing viruses, but for full protection, you’ll want to upgrade to something a little more powerful.

Our top recommended products are McAfee Security Center and Barracuda. Personally, I always use McAfee. Simply put, it’s what I’m used to at this point, and it’s always kept my PC clean. However, my roommate likes his Barracuda, and whenever I hop on his laptop, I find Barracuda to be just as effective as my McAfee setup.

With both, you’re going to get full protection from spam, popups, worms, Trojans, viruses, spybots, adware, malware, you name it, and both are easy to use and customizable. You don’t have to worry about it deleting the system notification emails you get from your regular message boards or anything, just let the software know that that’s a friendly email address.

Whichever one you go with, you can’t go wrong. Of course, you’ll probably want to do some research of your own, and maybe even find something better than either McAfee or Barracuda. That’s fine, take your time and make sure you’re getting the absolute best full protection you can get. But until then, just make sure you’re covered. Go ahead and grab Avira AntiVir, and you’ll at least be able to put up a temporary defense until you settle on a full package.
