One of the biggest flaws of security software is that it tends to defeat its own purpose. The reason you want to keep viruses and so on off of your computer is simple. You want to keep your computer running in perfect condition, and you want to save a little time for yourself.
So how much time are you really saving when it takes the better half of your weekend just to configure your virus killer? How well is your computer running when spam blocker eats up about half of your available RAM at all times of the day?
The fact is that a lot of internet security programs, while they work, and they get the job done, kind of miss out on the main point of any product, which is, of course, keeping your customer happy, giving them something for their hard earned dollar. When your virus killer eats up more space and memory on the computer than the viruses did, you’re not doing your users any big favors.
So with that in mind, here are a few simple, easy to use, no frills security programs, that will not eat up too much of your time, or your computer’s memory…
McAfee Security Center
The best thing about McAfee is that it’s not difficult to use, and it’s a full coverage package. It will eat up spam like candy, it will kill viruses like space invaders, and it will block pop ups like the surly bald bouncer outside of the exclusive nightclub. At fifty bucks, it is a little pricier than most, however, when you consider that you may never need to buy another scanner or pop up blocker, you’ll consider that to be fifty bucks very well spent.
Avira AntiVirus
If you just want a simple, bare bones, extremely powerful antivirus program, and you want it for free, look no further than Avira. It is very nearly perfect as far as free antivirus programs go. It gets updates at least once a day, it’s easy to use, it never requires rebooting or reinstallation, and it works, boasting one of the largest databases of known viruses.
AVGFree
AVGFree, another free one, is designed to basically let you install your virus software, and then get on with your life. Maybe one of the simplest and easiest to use. The only problem is that it does require a reinstallation every now and then. We recommend Avira, but some prefer AVGFree. The choice is yours.
