In the past few years many of us have splashed out the cash on a high definition television set in order to enhance our viewing experience, however, according to the British Video Association (BVA) many are not seeing HD at all.
According to the BVA more than 6 million people in the UK who have high definition television sets have not connected the necessary equipment in order to view HD properly.
A poll of 9,500 viewers revealed that more than half (55 percent), had spent a small fortune on high definition televisions.
Of those questioned, 30 percent thought they could watch high definition discs at home but only 58 percent of that group had actually connected the right equipment in order to be able to do so.
Spokesman for BVA, Simon Heller said:
“In the run up to the World Cup, even more people will be looking to invest in HD, but they need to be aware that a high definition television alone does not mean they are watching content in high definition.
“You are only getting a high definition experience if you are watching content via a bolt-on high definition set-top box, a Blu-ray player, or a PS3 console”.
Basically what is being said is that there is absolutely no point in rushing out to buy a high definition television set to get advanced quality viewing unless you also purchase or already have another device to unlock the high definition.
If you don’t, and the study revealed that many haven’t, you are only going to get the bog standard picture quality you had without the HD TV.
Watching discs is one thing, you can do that with the Blu-ray player or the PlayStation but to watch some television programmes in high definition you also need to take out a high definition package with the likes of Sky or Virgin or buy yourself a high definition Freeview or Freesat set top box.
More and more content is becoming available in HD format and currently Sky Digital offers the most with around 40 high definition channels. The BBC has a HD channel as do ITV 1 and Channel 4.
Ok now we’ve got that sorted we can get on with enjoying the World Cup and other stuff in HD but don’t get too comfortable, 3D is next. Technology waits for no one.
