Googlewhack

Looking at my post title, you’re probably asking yourself “what is a Googlewhack?” right?

Well according to Wikipedia:

A Googlewhack is a Google search query consisting of two words–both of which must be in Google’s dictionary, and without quotation marks–that returns a single result.

A successful Googlewhack returns ‘Results 1-1 of 1′. Googlewhacking is the pastime of seeking such a result. A person attempting to find a Googlewhack is known as a Googlewhacker.

Sounds like a fun online game don’t you think? Trying to find a pair of words which, when typed into Google, return exactly one web page.

I thought so too and have spent close to an hour trying to find a GoogleWhack without any luck. Boo.

Thanks to Gary Stock, the relentless searcher who coined the term ‘Googlewhack’ back in January 2001, we now have something fun for those times when we don’t want to work but still need to be on the internet looking productive. Yay!

Check out Gary’s site GoogleWhack.com for the rules on how to play and to submit your GoogleWhack.

Have fun and be sure to let me know what you come up with… and if I finally find one, I’ll let you know as well.

    Sean,
I think you have finally be affected by the weather. :)

Please call me soon. The disease that you’re suffering from is known as cabin fever. There is a cure. . . .

    Hi Sean:

    This took about 3 seconds.

My last name is uncommon in English speaking countries . .. . and I had the word “splediferous” on the brain. Splediferous is a not-so-commonly used variant of splendid.

Thus, “splediferous bachofner” (without the quotes) results in a “Googlewhack” as of 1:35 PST on Dec. 21, 2006.

Alas, the result does not point to any of my splendid web pages.

WAIT A MINUTE, do proper names count in the Googlewhack quest? I think not.

My “Googlewhack” apparently violates “Rule Number One.”

    Back to the drawing board.

Perhaps it would be easier to use two VERY uncommon words on a web page of one’s own creation and wait for the Google spider . . ..

    Is THAT cheating?

Dude, you’re a nut… Splediferous?!? You made that up :)

As for the official rules for this game, you’ll need to check the GoogleWhack website.

Gary Stock came up with it, not me :)

Actually “splendiferous” is a word. You just forgot the N. This sounds like fun. I will post if I find any results.

Not yet. I noticed that all the ones submitted there no longer work. I just wanted to show you all beforehand.

    Hi Megadeth:

No, I didn’t forget the “n” in “splendiferous” when I Googlewhacked it. Somehow I missed typing it on Sean’s comment section — or it just got eaten by the seanrox server . . . [You'll see I noted it is a variant of splendid, which also, of course, has an "n."]

Speaking of missing letters “Megadeth,” I always thought presumed favorite metal group needs a spelling lesson.

By the way, “rectangular encephalopod” is a pretty brilliant Googlewhack.

However, like my last name, “encephalopod” violates “Rule Number One.” [You’ll note that word is NOT hyperlinked in the results count bar. See: http://www.googlewhack.com/rules.htm

I think it’s time we petition Answers.com for entering my last name and “encephalopd” into the dictionary that Google parses for their word entries.

Both are valid words . . . though mine is quite archaic, stemming from German in the middle ages.

    Good grief! Go Flex Go!

That’s one long reply but valid points.

The band Megadeth spelled their name that way on purpose.

When Dave Mustaine was kicked out of Metallica back in 1983 he started his own band with a similar logo and font. Dave is actually a highly intelligent person.

As an added bonus, Dave Mustaine wrote most of the songs on the first three Metallica albums if you were to read the liner notes.

Hmm Got a 1-4 and a 1-3 but can’t narrow it down beyond that. This is NOT how I was going to spend my evening! :)

I FOUND ONE! A genuine googlewhack! It’s… “squidward’s pajammies”. But when you search it, forget the quoties.
