The Los Angeles Times newspaper has built a brilliant Google Maps mashup called the Homicide Map showing all murders in the city this year (515 at post time):
The functionality of the data presentation and user-selectable options for specifying age, race, gender, cause of death and day of the week are pretty interesting.

I think it would be interesting if they released the demographics of the murderers as well (where known, of course), but I suspect that there’s some privacy law against that.
