When we think about holidays, most of us imagine getting away from it all to relax and unwind away from the stresses and strains of daily work and living.

However, these days, the idea of leaving all our gadgets at home is no longer an option many of us would choose says a recent survey.

Lowcostholidays and Dixons Travel carried out a poll and found that as many as 73 percent considered a mobile phone as an essential gadget to take with them on holiday and 87 percent actually used a mobile whilst away with 46 percent of them relying on text messages in order to keep in touch with friends and family back home.

Also, 40 percent of people who took their mobiles away with them used their mobiles to take holiday snaps and almost half of them uploaded their holiday snaps to sites like Facebook to share their pics with others.

Furthermore, almost half of those surveyed said they could not go on holiday without their MP3 player and 40 percent would not even consider leaving home to go on holiday without taking their hair straighteners and other hair appliances with them.

No longer does going on holiday mean getting away from it all either, as more than half of those in the survey (59 percent) felt the need to access the internet whilst away and used the hotel’s computer or a nearby internet café to do so.

However, having said all that, what most people said they enjoyed the most whilst on holiday was reading a good book and relaxing.

The survey also revealed that the most annoying aspect of going on holiday was that it just wasn’t long enough.

Paul Evans, chief executive of lowcostholidays.com said, “In today’s fast-moving online world, gadgets not only help holidaymakers choose and book their holidays, they also feature highly on their holiday essentials list.

“But it’s reassuring to see a good book is how holidaymakers really want to unwind while away.”

I don’t know about anyone else but I can understand why people want to take their gadgets with them on holiday, I for one feel cut off from the world without my mobile phone and that feeling alone is enough to cause stress.

Mobiles are handy for calling cabs, booking a restaurant, finding directions and all sorts of things and as you can always turn it off, it doesn’t make sense to leave it behind.
