Gadget Lovers vs. The Security Folk

Boxing MatchThe coming war over iPhone: IT professionals, charged with company security, will ban and block the Apple iPhone at all costs. Why?

The Wi-Fi-enabled iPhone has no firewall, no Exchange or Lotus Notes support, no PBX integration and no ability to wipe company information from it if lost or stolen. It’s a security hazard and a liability.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Apple and AT&T will actively market the device to professionals and business people will want them.

Clearly a war is shaping up between IT people responsible for company data security and gadget-loving users, who will want to connect to the Wi-Fi network at work and carry sensitive company data around on their iPhones.

So here is the question of the day: Who will win in the war and why? Gadget lovers or IT Security Professionals?

IT Security Professionals will win the war; but they may not win this battle.

There’s no question that gadget lovers will win the war. After all, no matter how unsecure something is, if everyone wants it, from management down to secretaries, they will have to give in. Additionally, half of the IT folk are the gadget lovers too…

I’m torn as a gadget lover and IT security “folk”… Obviously the use of gadgets comes down to a company by company basis depending on upper managements acceptance of risk.

The smaller the company, the better chance you get to use your gadgetry, the larger the corporation the less likely upper management will accept that risk.

If you want to use your gadgets as tools for work, start your own business or get in on a progressive small company.
