Free Anti Spam Filter For Your Home PC

Well, it looks like a spybot got onto my PC, or something, because I just received an email from an address that is almost my sister’s email address. I was kind of wondering why my own sister would send me a link to a free porn site, and then I remembered “Hey, my sister uses Gmail, not AOL!”

And here I was thinking I was doing my part to avoid spam just by putting an (at) instead of an @, and a (dot com) instead of a .com whenever I put it up in a forum somewhere.

So I’ve been looking for some free spam filters, and here are the ones I’ve found to be amongst the most effective and most popular.

POPFile

POPFile is one hundred percent free, and is widely considered one of the most powerful and flexible email classification POP and NNTP proxies for filtering spam. Users say that POPFile is very good at classifying good mail, and it doesn’t seem to delete the messages you need very often.

One complaint a few users have had is that it does tend to eat up quite a bit of memory and CPU load when you have a huge influx of mail, so you should probably couple it with some tricks of the trade, like the aforementioned email disguising of putting an (at) in there instead of an @.antispam Free Anti Spam Filter For Your Home PC

Spamihilator

What Spamihilator boasts over its competition is the fact that it is incredibly easy to use, and has a pretty good detection rate. It’s not quite as powerful as POPFile, but if you’re better at deleting a stray spam mail now and then than you are at dealing with complex configuration options, Spamihilator might be the right choice for you. And yes, I know, Spamihilator doesn’t sound as much like “annihilator” as they obviously think it does. Take it up with them, though, because I’m not the one who came up with that silly name!

SpamPal

SpamPal uses a simple process of spam blacklisting. So whenever a new spammail account is detected or reported to the system, it is added to the database. This is a great idea, right? Well, it will work about 99% of the time, but a lot of users complain that the blacklists should be updated on a more regular basis.

Every one of the above listed programs has its strengths and its faults. We recommend giving each one a try, seeing how well it works, and deciding for yourself. When they get around to inventing the first perfect spam filter, we’ll be the first to let you know.
