Disney Netpal launched by Asus and Disney

Even if you’re totally fed up of hearing about Netbooks, as I’m sure a lot of people are by now, they’re still popular with consumers and if they’re popular with consumers then computer makers are going to keep on making them.

It seems that new ones have been coming out week after week for years and yet netbooks themselves have only been around since October 2007.

The latest targets are the kids amongst us and the latest offering comes courtesy of Disney and Asus who have teamed up to bring us a netbook which is appropriately called the “Disney Netpal” basically a dressed up Eee PC MK90.

I like the ‘Pal’ bit and no doubt it will go down well with kids as their Netbook is likely to become like their best friend or at least give them constant access to their friends online.

We mustn’t forget it was Asus who actually brought us the very first Netbook so to all extents and purposes, they must be the company with the most experience by now. I just wonder why it took them so long to come up with a kids’ version like this.

So what sort of specs can we expect with the Eee PC MK90, no sorry the Disney Netpal? Unsurprisingly as it turns out, we’re getting nothing spectacular.

You’ll find an Intel Atom 1.6 GHz processor, 1 GB RAM, 3 USB ports, on board webcam, memory card reader, VGA out, Ethernet and of course the obligatory Wi-Fi capability.

The 8.9 inch Netbook runs with Windows XP. It is also pretty durable as the hard disc is protected against drops and the keyboard is spill resistant. Let’s face it, for kids this is the least we would expect.

It is available in Princess Pink or Magic Blue and of course comes with full parental controls complete with curfews.

If you want one of these for your kids and you live in the USA then you can purchase a Disney Netpal from Toys “R” Us for just under $400.

Due to licensing issues, the Netbook won’t be available in all countries. However, if you live in the UK, France, Italy, or Turkey, or across in Australia, or over in Japan, Taiwan or Hong Kong, the Netbooks will apparently be available before the end of the year.

Just in time for Christmas would be a good move.
