Dell said last week that they were planning to announce details of their new servers with the new Intel Nehalem chips.
At a Tokyo news conference, Michael Dell said “We have a very big announcement coming in the next few days around the Intel Nehalem architecture, our eleventh-generation enterprise architecture, along with new improvements in our services offering and enhancements to our EquilLogic storage offering.”

Sounds exciting, so what exactly are we getting?
Dell’s new line up of five servers all with the latest Intel Nehalem processors which have become known as the Xeon 5500 series, include two rack mount servers, two blade servers and one tower. A key feature of the new chip is the Turbo Boost which can help deal with heavier processing loads.
In the current economic climate it all seems to be about lower costs and energy savings and both Dell and Intel are promoting the cost and energy savings of the new servers and chips.
Kirk Skaugen from Intel said last week at a conference that a Nehalem chip would be able to take on the work of nine single core servers and that upgrading to just a single Nehalem based server would represent savings to offset the cost of the new server in less than a year, around eight months to be precise and only two years with the dual core systems.
Ok so that’s going to raise a few eyebrows and no doubt secure a few sales even with the current state of the economy.
According to Sally Stevens, director of Power Edge platform marketing at Dell, the new servers when combined with the new management console would save businesses floor space, power and time and said “It allows them to focus on what is important, less on maintaining the current infrastructure and more on focusing on strategic projects and growing their own business,”
Dell is the second largest manufacturer of computers and is one of many that will be using the new Intel Xeon 5500 chips. Apple is already using it in the Apple Mac Pro for example and Intel said they had shipped “hundreds of thousands” of the new chips to server makers in advance of the official launch.
Dells new servers complete with Nehalem chip will be available for pre order on Monday and will start shipping by Friday
