Dell removes Ubuntu laptops and desktops from its website

Dell removes

Dell has decided to ditch most of their Ubuntu computer and laptops from its website; however, the company said they will still be selling them over the phone.

“Dell has offered select consumer systems with Ubuntu pre-installed for more than two years, and is continuing to do so” a company spokesperson told PC Pro.

Of course the question most people are asking is why, why has Dell removed Ubuntu systems from their website when surely that is where most people would go to buy one?

“The reason why they’re not on our main pages is because Ubuntu systems are primarily targeted towards advanced users and enthusiasts, and the vast majority of consumers purchase PCs with Microsoft Windows pre-installed” a Dell spokesperson told PC Pro.

Dell says on one of their pages that you should only buy Ubuntu if you do not plan to use Microsoft Windows or you are interested in open source programming and that you should choose Windows if you are already using Windows programmes, are familiar with Windows and don’t want to learn new programmes for email and word processing, or if you are new to using computers.

They are still selling some of the computers with Ubuntu including a few Inspiron and Vostro laptops and desktop computers including Inspiron Mini 10 Netbook and also the Studio XPS 7100 desktop.

“We’ve recently made an effort to simplify our offerings online, by focusing on our most popular bundles and configuration options, based on customer feedback for reduced complexity and a simple, easy purchase experience. We’re also making some changes to our Ubuntu pages, and as a result, they are currently available through our phone-based sales only.”

So this would suggest they are expecting more experienced users to phone them up to buy an Ubuntu machine, when surely more experienced users are more likely to buy straight off the site.

Intriguingly, a spokesperson for Dell also told PC Pro “this is not a permanent decision, and Dell remains committed to offering Ubuntu”.

The spokesman couldn’t give an indication of when Ubuntu computers would be available for sale on its website again or even if they ever would.

Wasn’t it only last month that Dell said that Ubuntu was safer than Windows, particularly when browsing the internet?

Elsewhere on the Dell website they are still listing the top ten reasons to buy Ubuntu, which appears to conflict with their latest actions to remove the Linux based operating systems from their website.

It’s all quite bizarre.
