You’ve got to admit, having to find an electric socket to plug your laptop into every few hours is both inconvenient and irritating. Not only have you got to sit tethered to the wall, it kind of restricts your sense of freedom too.

It’s not a problem with Dell’s new Latitude Z laptop though as Dell have done away with the need for wires, well almost.

All you have to do is place the laptop in a sort of docking unit which isn’t directly plugged into the laptop itself and which releases electro magnetic energy to wirelessly charge the laptop up. Like it!

“There’s a coil in the bottom of the notebook and then there’s a matching coil in the stand. You set them next to each other and it generates a current that flows and charges the battery,” said Steve Belt, Vice President of Business Client Engineering at Dell.

The Latitude Z, which is being hailed as the world’s thinnest and lightest 16 inch laptop, is not a cheap machine and neither is the docking system for it which you have to buy as an optional extra.

So, if you want both the laptop and the docking station you’ll have to cough up. Prices for the Latitude Z alone start at around $2000.

So what other delights are you getting for your dosh?

The Dell Latitude Z ultra thin laptop runs on a 1.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and it has 2GB of memory. It can also support two 265 GB hard drives.

There’s an Arm processor included, which allows you to boot up the laptop quickly and easily for fast access to applications such as email and web browser.

The Latitude Z weighs in at 4.5 pounds (2 kilograms) and measures one inch at its thinnest point. The 16 inch display screen has a resolution of 1600 x 900.

Another interesting feature that comes with the Latitude Z is the cool touch screen frame which can be used to launch applications and scroll through web pages.

Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/g/n and mobile broadband connectivity through 3G or WiMax networks.

If it takes off then Dell will consider incorporating wireless charging into some of their other products.
