A leading market research company, the NPD, have just released the results of their “2009 Household Penetration Study” and nearly 85 percent of households that have an Apple computer, also have a Windows PC.

Interesting that isn’t it? Just to think, once upon a time we all thought that Mac lovers shunned PCs but by the looks of things they either hid the fact they had a PC too or the times they are a changing.
Other findings from the study that are somewhat interesting include that more Apple owners have laptops, in fact the study showed that 72 percent of Apple owners also have laptop compared to only 50 percent of Windows PC owners.
So more Apple owners have laptops and Apple owners seem to have more computers and more electronic gadgets than PC owners in general. Why should this be the case? Well check this out.
“While Apple owners tend to own more computers and more electronics devices, there is also a high correlation among Apple owners and more affluent consumer households,” said Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis.
So basically, people who buy Apple products tend to be better off financially than those who opt for a PC instead.
“Thirty-six percent of Apple computer owners reported household incomes greater than $100,000, compared to 21 percent of all consumers.
“With a higher household income, though, it’s not a surprise that those consumers are making more electronics purchases,” Baker said.
“The average Apple household owns 48 CE devices whereas the average computer household owns about 24. Apple household owners’ actions and purchases can be used by the industry as leading indicators for hot new products and adoption.”
Now if we look a bit more closely at the figures we see something else that might catch our attention. According to the study, 12 percent of all American households now own a Mac, which is up by 3 percent on last year.
Wait a minute, isn’t there a recession just now. What does this tell us? Well if Apple owners are better off and Apple owners are buying more computers, then could it be that the more affluent in the population don’t seem to be as hard hit by the recession as everyone else?
Makes you think doesn’t it?
