CES CES promises iPhone credit card reader and more

The annual International Consumer Electronics Show is about to take place in Las Vegas from January 7th to January 10th and this year looks like it might be more exciting than last year with a record number of exhibitors unveiling their latest technologies.

This means that we can look forward to heaps of new gadgets and devices to satisfy our appetite for all things geeky.

Take the iPhone credit card reader as just one example, it’s an iPhone accessory offered by Mophie and it basically turns the iPhone into a gadget that can make credit card payments.

All you have to do is plug it into your iPhone and it will allow you to swipe credit cards which are then processed by an iPhone app that will handle the transactions.

Mophie is not the first to do this though; they are up against a company called Square, created by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey. Still, it shows what’s coming and we’ll learn more at the CES. I’m sure in future we’ll all be making payments using our phones.

Other offerings at the CES include 3D technologies and products, as well as numerous devices operating somewhere between a SmartPhone and a Netbook, Tablet PCs, and Wi-Fi enabled devices, Green products, eReaders and much more.

Both Transfer Jet and Wi-Fi Direct are appearing at the show so we can maybe expect a few surprises in the wireless communication department.

Something that also promises to be interesting is what SatNav companies Garmin and TomTom have to say with both of these companies appearing at the event.

They have been up against it in the past year as more mobile phones and apps offer navigation features. I wonder if they’ve got something new to offer.

For those who don’t know, the International Consumer Electronics show is a held every January in Las Vegas and is sponsored by the Consumer Electronics Association.

Companies use the show to launch new products or preview products that are up and coming and it is the largest and possibly the most major technology related show in the world.

This year more than 330 companies and more than 2,500 exhibitions are expected with more than 20,000 new products to show off.

“With a record number of new exhibitors, scores of new product introductions, several new Spotlights on the show floor and a dynamic lineup of keynotes sessions, the 2010 International CES will be our best show yet,” said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, CEA.

Can’t wait!
