SRG Clean Archives 4.0.3 Released

As most users would agree, the plugin was in major need of some love and attention from the original 2.1 release which was released back in January 2007.

That’s the major reason why since April 30, 2007 when I took over the development of the plugin there’s been a ton of releases from me. Things needed to be brought up to the current needs and standards for the majority of WordPress users.

Basically after version 3.0 which I released on May 15, 2007 I’ve mostly been adding in features from user requests and optimizing the source code.

Ok, now the meat and potatoes of the SRG Clean Archives version 4.0.3 release…

Per a user feature request and sort of a bug that was caught by Owen Kelly, I’ve added an option to the plugin admin menu so you can toggle on/off showing a link to your detailed monthly post archive.

If you were wondering, detailed monthly archives are just the standard WordPress paged archives and the link will appear below the month link if toggled on.

Special thanks goes out to Owen for helping me get this bug/feature option working properly and doing some late night (or morning depending on your timezone) testing.

Seriously, I think this is going to be the final release for a little while… at least for more then 24-48 hours like I’ve been doing.

Thank you for your continued support and use of SRG Clean Archives.

PayPal donations are never expected but always appreciated: PayPal Donations

Thanks to Weblog Tools Collection for helping spread the word about SRG Clean Archives.

Updated: There was a small code validation error pointed out by a user which is now fixed as of version 4.0.4. Not a major release but wanted to let everyone know.

SRG Clean Archives 4.0.2 Released

SRG Clean ArchivesYes, I know SRG Clean Archives 4.0 was just released about 24-48 hours ago but hey, I’m a code monkey and I like to fine tune my code with the various projects that I work on.

Without any further delay, I bring you SRG Clean Archives version 4.0.2.

So you must be asking yourself “what the hell could Sean have updated now with this amazing WordPress plugin?”

I did a little more code clean up so the archive output validates XHTML (pending your page template is valid).

Also per a user feature request from Gene Steinberg of “Mac Night Owl” I added an option to the plugin admin menu so you can toggle on/off the moo.fx for collapsing months.

For the JavaScript geeks out there, this moo.fx visual effect feature is enabled by default.

If moo.fx is not enabled, your full archive display will be shown (yes, 3 miles long for some users) but it’s still using the caching function so it loads nice and fast.

Of course, I also updated the readme.txt and the change-log.txt file, so be sure to check those out too.

I guess that’s it for now, however I am working on a couple of other minor things with using the moo.fx enabled option, so there could be another release in the coming days.

For all the SRG Clean Archive users and supporters out there in WordPress Land, if you have any suggestions, comments or bug reports, let me know.

Thank you for your continued support and use of SRG Clean Archives.

SRG Clean Archives 4.0 Released

I’m pleased to announce the release of SRG Clean Archives 4.0 for WordPress which has been completely rewritten from version 3.0.

In this latest release, you’ll notice the following features and improvements:

Updated SRG Clean Archives Admin Page with the following options:

  • Toggle on/off showing total post count next to month (on by default)
  • Toggle on/off showing total comment count next to post title (on by default)
  • Added option to toggle on/off password protected post display (off by default)
  • PayPal donation button so you can show your support :)

The plugin code was completely rewritten (again) with the following enhancements:

  • Added a caching function (only generates 1 or 2 queries per page view)
  • Added collapsing months using moo.fx javascript effects library
  • User can expand or collapse full month view from archives page

By using moo.fx to achieve the collapsing month effect, the final user visible display is much cleaner and not a mile long if you have hundreds or thousands of posts.

However, to search engines, all your archived posts are still being shown. Just view source of your archives page to confirm this. Yay web 2.0 technology.

Please be aware that if you are upgrading from any version prior to 4.0, it’s not just a simple upload a new plugin file and go.

The plugin structure is completely rewritten, there is a new token to use when creating a dedicated archives page and the plugin now has it’s own dedicated folder, so be sure to read the readme.txt file included with the download.

I still have plans to automate the process of adding the code to a page for creating the archives page but I’m working through some issues with the WordPress visual editor which is causing some problems if you try and use the token while using the visual editor.

Right now you have to use code mode and/or have the visual editor turned off on the specific page for your archives.

I’d like to take this time and give some link love and thanks to the following people for contributing to and/or testing this latest release:

That’s about it for now.

If you find this plugin useful, consider making a PayPal donation to show your support.

If you have any comments, suggestions or bugs to report, let me know.

SRG Clean Archives 4.0 Beta Testers Needed

Software IconThat’s right folks, after many sleepless nights and hours of coding, SRG Clean Archives 4.0 is now completed.

However, before I release it into the wild, I wanted to have a few WordPress users give it a test run and let me know how it works under different server configurations and WordPress installs.

I’d also like the new readme.txt file to be looked over for ease of use and understanding.

I think having a few fresh eyes giving it a test would help me feel better about releasing it to the masses, that way if something goes wonky, I have others to blame for not catching it and I won’t be releasing a bug fix the following day like with version 3.0.1 :)

Version 4.0 is completely rewritten (once again) from version 3.0 and a lot of new features, code and performance enhancements have been put into place.

Upgrading from 2.x to 3.x versions won’t be just be overwriting your previous version but I personally feel that it’s still an easy install.

This is another reason I’d like to let a few people test it out and let me know before I release it to the public.

If this sounds like something of interest to you, let me know with a comment and/or contact me using my contact page and I’ll provide you with a test release.

Pending how the real world testing goes, SRG Clean Archives 4.0 should be available for general download within 24-48 hours of this post.

SRG Clean Archives Road Map

Well it’s been a few days since I released SRG Clean Archives version 3.0 and my brain has been going non-stop thinking about what features can be added, how it can be tweaked and optimized more.

Thanks to the WordPress community for the huge amounts of comments, suggestions and emails on what could be added for new features or ways to improve the plugin.

With that being said, I figured it was time for a “road map” post to let you know what’s to come for the future development of the plugin.

Upcoming features in the next release will be:

  • Adjust the archive output from the plugin admin page (H1, H2, Strong, etc.)
  • Toggle on and off display of RSS post/comment subscribe for each post
  • One click auto addition of the plugin page
  • Output Caching (to help with load times)

I received a great suggestion from Ajay D’Souza from his review on the Weblog Tools Collection Blog which was to make an option to “Display only the months and when the user clicks on it, the posts of that month will be loaded”. This is now on the top of my To-Do list.

One of the main goals is to have everything controlled from the plugin admin page and make it very easy for people to use this plugin and with the above upcoming features, that’s one more step in the right direction.

So these are just a few of the things to come in the next major release, so if you have any ideas or suggestions to improve the plugin, let me know.

Thanks to everyone for your continued support and use of SRG Clean Archives.
