Now what do you think is likely to happen if you go and leave your laptop in a taxi? You’re going to think it is has pretty much gone forever aren’t you.
Especially if you just happen to be travelling late at night, to a place where no one knows you, and you haven’t got a clue how to get back in touch with the taxi driver who is already well on his way.
After you’ve got over the initial shock at what you’ve done and the anger at yourself for being so stupid, you would most probably resign yourself to the fact that even if you do report the loss to the police it’s unlikely you’re ever going to see your beloved laptop again.
Well you can take comfort from the fact that this may not necessarily be the case according to a story reported in The Times of India. Well if you’re in India that is.
A techie by the name of Bimal Jalan did just that. He left his laptop and a bag containing 7000 rupees behind in the taxi when the driver dropped him and his four colleagues off sometime late on Saturday night.
A laptop and cash is a pretty expensive tip in anyone’s book and as taxi drivers in India are not exactly well off it could have been quite tempting for the taxi driver in this case to keep the find.
Not for Shshanka Shekhar Kundu though, the guy driving Jalan’s taxi that night. Kundu noticed the laptop on the seat not long after he drove away and promptly returned to the spot where he had dropped the guys off but unfortunately they were nowhere to be seen.
Kundu didn’t give up there, he started asking around to see if anyone had seen his passengers so that he could return the belongings to the rightful owner but got nowhere with that either.
Finally Kundu decided to hand the laptop and the bag of cash to a local taxi union who looked inside the bag and found Jalan’s contact details. Ok so the driver could have done that but never mind.
Less than 24 hours after Jalan got out of the taxi he was back in possession of his laptop and his money thanks to the honesty of that taxi driver.
“What he has done is commendable” said a member of the taxi union commenting on Kundu’s action. And it is commendable.
We hear much too often about laptops getting lost and stolen so it’s a refreshing change to hear a story about a laptop being returned.
Good on you Kundu.
