BlackBerrys: So Easy A Caveman Could Do It

I was talking with a friend today about the good, bad and ugly with Apple iPhones verses other smartphone devices and why I feel that BlackBerrys are better for a lot of reasons.

The conversation went on for close to an hour, jumping up and down like a Jack Russell Terrier but to sum up my “short and sweet” answer to my friend:

There’s a reason why Research In Motion’s BlackBerry devices are so popular. They work.

They’re simple to use and they don’t throw their users into an existential identity crisis.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I find those Geico.com commercials featuring cavemen to be humorous.

Whoever thought them up must have been fans of the old Saturday Night Live Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer skits with Phil Hartman. Either way, RIM could almost adopt them as their own.

The first time I used a BlackBerry was a couple of years ago. RIM makes them so intuitive to use that anyone can figure them out in about 5 minutes. Including cavemen.

Aside from delivering a never ending stream of e-mails to your hip, they also run a host of third-party applications that let enterprise workers be productive when out in the field.

As I mentioned in a previous post, RIM Announced that a Wi-Fi-Enabled BlackBerry would be released.

Shortly after that announcement from RIM, they let us know about the BlackBerry 8820 which will give smartphone devices like the iPhone a good run for it’s money.

For the record, I’m not an iPhone hater but for me, BlackBerrys do exactly what I need in a handheld device:

  • Make phone calls
  • Large phone book capabilities
  • Send and receive email
  • SMS Text Messages
  • Look up directions

If I want to watch movies or play games on the go, I have my laptop. If I want to listen to music or my collection of MP3’s, I have my iPod.

I am looking forward to the BlackBerry 8820 for the 802.11 a/b/g capabilities.

It should be hitting stores here in the United States in the coming weeks, however I won’t camp out the night before like all you iPhone hippies did. Silly hippies. :)
