To be honest, the best way to get the very best in antivirus protection is going to be to spend a dollar or two. The very best virus protection out there may well be McAfee’s Security Center, which is a great way to get full coverage all in one package. However, at fifty bucks, you might not want to go the distance.
Luckily, there actually are some great free antivirus programs out there.
So in determining which one is worth the download, what exactly do we want from a virus scanner?
Well first of all, we want great protection. That’s really the main thing it comes down to. Because a virus scanner can only kill viruses it can recognize, this has a lot to do with updates. The database has to be constantly in a state of update, or else it will fall behind and leave your computer open to infection. A daily update is best.
Second, we wouldn’t mind having a program that’s easy to use. Maybe not quite a “no brainer”, but one that doesn’t take the better half of a day just to configure correctly.
Perhaps the very best free antivirus scanner that fits both of these qualifications in spades would be Avira AntiVir. It’s totally free for the full package (whereas most free antivirus programs are downgraded from the real deal), and it gets updates not just once a day, but sometimes more than one per day.
And it is amongst the easier free virus scanners to use. It can easily squash any and all known viruses with nothing but an installation and the daily updates. No lengthy configuration process, no rebooting your computer with every update, it just simply works.
Although, some people actually prefer other virus scanners. Amongst the other best free virus killers, you have AVGFree, which may well be the absolute easiest virus killer out there when it comes to user friendliness. Another popular one is Avast! Home Edition, which is designed to give users a few more options than either Avira or AVG.
Now, again, the very best virus protection available is always going to come from full coverage programs like McAfee Security Center, but the free virus scanners are more than enough for many users, and even if not, they do make an excellent placeholder while you’re shopping around for something a bit better.
Whatever you do, don’t pay for less. If you’re going to buy a virus scanner, make sure it’s a step or two better than Avira.
