Asus New And Lighter 1002HAE Eee PC Netbook

The latest Netbook to appear on the scene is the Asus 1002HAE Eee PC, which follows on from the Asus 1002HA Eee PC. The newer version comes in an aluminium casing which makes it lighter and therefore easier to carry around.

For nearly two years now ever since Asus produced the first Netbook, those ultraportable and highly convenient little devices have been selling like hotcakes and like in any market driven economy, they’ll just keep on coming until we stop buying them which doesn’t look to be any time soon.

This means that Netbook producers are falling over themselves to give us something different in order to entice us to part with our cash, which isn’t an easy undertaking when we already have so many different Netbooks to choose from and a new one appearing almost every week.

So what do we get that’s different with this latest offering from Asus?

The Asus 1002HAE Eee PC has a 10 inch screen just like before but the aluminium casing basically lowers the weight to 1.2 Kg. The previous model which was the Asus 1002HA weighed in at only 1.4 Kg anyway, so not much of a difference really but in this highly competitive market every gram counts. .

The Asus 1002HAE Eee PC is just about to go on sale in Japan with a price tag of around $500 which when converted will likely cost us about £335 give or take a few pounds.

Wait a minute though, the Asus 1002HA only cost about £300 so are we getting more for our cash or are we basically paying for the empty space the reduction in weight has left behind, in other words are we paying for thin air?

If the look of the thing is important, and of course for many it is, then the Asus 1002HAE does have an edge on its predecessor but the reality is there’s not really much difference between the 1002HA and the newer and lighter 1002HAE.

Yes there’s a new1.66GHz N280 Atom Processor, whereas the previous version had 1.6GHz N270 processor but other than a very slight increase in speed, there’s really nothing else worth talking about.

There’s the 1GB RAM, 160GB Hard Drive, Wi-Fi, 1.3 Megapixel camera with a 10 inch display with a 1024 x 600 resolution and just under 4 hours of battery life, which is much the same as before and pretty standard specs for Netbook these days.

I have to say though I do prefer the aluminium casing so it just might be worth forking out the extra dosh.
