Astro boy Netbook shows up in Taiwan

astro boy netbook 300x252 Astro boy Netbook shows up in TaiwanWe’ve been hearing rumours about Astro Boy, a supposedly new kid on the Netbook block recently, but up until now no one was quite sure whether the Netbook was actually a real bona fide Netbook or not.

Now however, it would appear the rumours were absolutely true after the elusive Astro Boy Netbook showed up during IT month 2009 in Taipei, Taiwan. Netbook news showcased it at the month long event.

So what’s this Astro Boy Netbook all about?

The 10.1 inch Limited Edition Netbook has a cool looking silhouette of Astro Boy on the rubberised finish on the casing. The Netbook itself though is nothing special and really comes with fairly typical Netbook specs.

It features an Atom N270 processor, 1GB RAM, a 1024 x 600 display screen, several USB ports, headphone, microphone, 1.3 MP Webcam, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3 cell battery, and it runs on Windows XP.

That’s not all you get with the Astro Boy Netbook though, it comes with a box full of accessories which include an Astro branded MP3 player, external hard drive, external optical drive, USB Flash drive, and USB speakers with remote control, as well as a USB hub/card reader.

Only 1000 of these Astro Boy Netbooks are being made so the package also comes with a certificate of authenticity to prove that yours isn’t a fake. That is of course if you happen to be lucky enough to be able to get your hands on one.

The Astro Boy Netbook is only available in Taiwan and you would have to fork out around $900 for it, which is pretty steep for what amounts to nothing more than a standard Netbook at the end of the day, albeit an Astro Boy branded Netbook. Ok so it has a few extras thrown in for good measure, but still.

For those who don’t know, Astro Boy or “Mighty Atom” is a Japanese Manga series that has been around for the best part of ten decades and was first broadcast on TV in Japan in 1963.

An American computer animated film based on the highly popular Manga series was released in October this year.

Pity the nifty looking Netbook isn’t available in international markets yet and we don’t know if it ever will be but you can bet there’s a few geeks out there who would just love to have one of these, me included.
