Some industry experts reckon that the Netbook is about to sink into the realms of history as much better options become available.
Netbooks have enjoyed just over two years of unparalleled popularity as people rushed to get their own cheap and portable device for accessing the internet.
However, now, according to a BBC story, Stuart Miles, Founder and Editor of Technology blog Pocket Lint says Netbooks are on their way out.
“The days of the netbook are over” he said.
“Technology has advanced so much that it’s outmanoeuvred itself” says Miles.
“You wouldn’t go for something so basic anymore.”
It’s true, Netbooks have changed dramatically since they first came out and they’re a lot more functional now but then again you wouldn’t buy a Netbook if you wanted to edit pictures and videos or perform other more complex tasks that more and more users want to be able to do. There are other devices available that are far better equipped to do that.
Part of the reason for the decline of the Netbook is the very fact that they were so popular and took the world by storm in the first place.
What happened is that other companies soon caught on and started producing similar type devices with more features which has pushed the price of a Netbook up so that you would be better off buying a fully fledged laptop instead.
What people want now according to Miles is a device that will do more than what a basic Netbook is capable of doing, which is really nothing more than access the web and emails, he blames the Internet.
“As soon as you want to do anything else you hit the same problem, it ceases to work,” he said. “It does not have the power” says Miles.
“It’s the internet’s fault for making us much more multimedia savvy” he said.
So what’s going to take the place of Netbooks then, because let’s face it, they have filled a niche in the market.
Apparently the new touch tablets coming our way as well as better SmartPhones and also eReaders which can now do a lot more than just read text will all help to push the Netbook out.
The rumoured Apple Tablet is one such example, which could make an appearance within a matter of weeks; we’re all waiting to see what that does to the market.
If the Netbook does disappear it will surely always be remembered as the cheap and cheerful device that shook the whole computer industry into action.
