The rumours are out in force that Apple have struck a deal with Korean company LG to produce Organic LED displays not only for Apple’s iPhone and iPod touch but also for a new Netbook. Yes you read right, a new Apple Netbook featuring OLED technology.
The main advantage of ‘Organic Light Emitting Diode’ over ‘Liquid Crystal Displays’ is that with OLED you do not need a backlight as the individual pixels themselves produce their own light (glow) when an electric current is applied to them.
Without the need of a backlight the display screen can be much thinner, it can also be much lighter and the colours tend to be more vivid, perfect for a nifty little Netbook. The downside of course is that OLED is more expensive.
The source of the rumours appears to have originated from Smarthouse, the Australian technology and media magazine who claim that ‘inside sources’ have let it slip that the two companies are in talks to produce a 10 inch Netbook later this year, in fact just in time for Christmas, and that this Netbook will feature an OLED touch screen made by LG.
Another rumour is that LG are testing a new layer for the OLED screen that is resistant to body perspiration and oils and will make finger marking a thing of the past. I’m sure many of us struggling with grubby fingerprints all over our screens will be looking forward to that for sure.
Ok so we have no way of knowing if the rumours are true or not but the word is spreading fast creating much speculation and excitement over what the new Netbook will be like, how much it will cost and what operating system it will feature.
Netbooks are generally a lot cheaper than standard laptops, retailing for around $500 or less but if this new Netbook from Apple becomes a reality, it would be hard to imagine it selling in that sort of price range. Will we care? Probably not, we’ll buy it regardless.
When rumours on this scale emerge you can’t help but wonder if it has been done deliberately. If not, and if LG, which used to stand for ‘Lucky Goldstar’ but more recently has been tagged ‘Good Life’ really have let slip Apple’s secrets then you can bet they won’t be getting a gold star from Apple on this one.
