Ladies and gentlemen, the wait is finally over. Apple has announced iOS 6 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch at Worldwide Developers Conference 2012. What an update this is going to be. Last year Apple released iOS 5, the biggest iOS update to date. They have built up on that progress beautifully and have announced iOS 6 which is far better than it’s predecessor. When this update goes public later this year, iOS fans around the world will be up for a serious treat. For now, feast your eyes on the awesomeness that is going to be iOS 6.
We covered a lot of rumors lately regarding iOS 6. The announcement does finally put to bed those rumors, some of which have actually turned out to be true. iOS 6 is packed with amazing new features and it really is the world’s most advanced mobile operating system, like Apple touts it to be.
So what exactly is new in iOS 6? First off there’s an entirely new Maps app, just as I had predicted. Google Maps has been dropped as the mapping service for iOS devices. This app is developed by Apple itself whereas mapping data is provided by TomTom. The app is beautiful to say the least and offers 3D mapping functionality. Another thing I recently predicted was Facebook integration. That too has made the final cut of iOS 6. Users can now share content straight to their Facebook accounts from anywhere within iOS.
The native iOS apps have also been updated. Mail app now has Pull To Refresh feature for getting new emails. Phone app has been updated and the Settings app has two new “Do Not Disturb” and “Repeated Calls” toggles. Safari mobile browser also gets an update which includes ability to upload photos straight from Safari and offline reading lists. Oh and there’s a big update to FaceTime. Apple has finally allowed FaceTime over 3G or 4G in iOS 6.
Siri has also been updated quite extensively in iOS 6. Furthermore owners of New iPad will be delighted to hear that Siri is coming to the New iPad in iOS 6. Apart from these updates, there have been many changes to the overall functioning of iOS 6. Surely this update does not cease to amaze. iOS 6 will be supported by iPod touch 4G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and New iPad. Unfortunately, support for the original iPad has been dropped in iOS 6.
So there you have it. Apple’s next generation iOS update. It really is amazing and I for one can’t wait to try it out. No word on the release date as yet, but Apple says it will be coming out this fall.
