If you have a Microsoft computer with a nice, fresh copy of Windows Vista installed, well then, you are pretty much set when it comes to finding compatible software.
Since Microsoft kind of hit the first home run when it came to home computers, and was really at the start of the huge boom we saw in the early nineties in that market, they’re kind of the default company for Desktops.
And so, Windows is the operating system with pretty much the widest user base period. Perhaps Mac OSX comes a distant second, but it’s a very distant second.
And then, if you’re a true geek, and you’re stickin’ with your Unix or Linux, your choices are even more limited. You’re simply not going to find much without trying really hard.
This can be a real problem when it comes to virus and spyware protection. You need some sort of protection, but it’s not always easy to find.
So with that in mind, we’re going to go ahead and list some good protection for the lesser used operating systems.
For Mac- Norton Antivirus
The good thing about Mac is that it is pretty virus-resistant. In fact, Apple used to run their ads based on that statement alone. Back when people first started to become aware of how much damage a virus could do, and how susceptible Windows was to them, Mac took pride in rubbing their competitor’s nose in that short coming.
But finally, after years of pretending that their system is bullet proof, Apple is finally recommending their users grab some virus scanners! Norton AntiVirus is probably the best you’re going to find for a general, all around virus killer that also covers spyware.
Unix and Linux- AVG Free
Here’s some good news for Unix and Linux users, one of the best antivirus programs available for your system is actually free. AVG Free began life as a Windows operating system virus killer, but quickly branched out to various other platforms.
Is it as powerful as the Windows McAfee Security Center? Not really. Is it as potent as Norton Antivirus? Not quite.
But here’s the thing, Unix and Linux, as we all know, are really for dedicated geeks only, and dedicated geeks know how to stay away from spam in the first place. All we really need is a basic, simple, easy to use virus and spyware killer, and we should be set. AVG Free does that.
