Acer launches the Chromebook 11.6″
Last week we featured the Samsung 5 Chromebook, powered by Google and likely to offered by the search giant too! But now it is the time of Acer the other half of the Chromebook partnership. The principle is the same as in this is a laptop powered by the Google Chrome operating system.
The cost is likely to be staring at around $350, but there is no hard drive this is replaced by a 16 GB SSD drive, initially this could be worrying for the consumer simply on storage issues. However, this is a machine that has been designed to be light on software and fast in operation. It is ideal as second computer that is used by someone who is out of the office and yet requires use of a laptop.
The Chromebook comes with an 11.6 inch high definition wide screen CineCrystal LED back lit LCD display.
It will weigh in at around 2.95 lbs which is about 1.34 kg, so this is a highly portable device too and as it comes with a battery that offers the user up to six hours of continuous usage the Chromebook could be a very popular machine.
The Chromebook will be powered by the Intel Atom Dual N570 1.66 GHz dual core processor, with 2 GB of DDR3 memory and as with the Samsung version of the Chromebook, it will only have a 16 GB worth of SSD drive.
Networking comes in the shape of the built in dual band Wi-Fi, but there is the option to upgrade to the World mode 3G, although there is not mention of the price of this upgrade.
Built into the screen frame is a high definition web camera complete with a noise cancelling microphone and high definition audio support too!
Connectivity is through two standard USB 2.0 ports, a handy 4 in 1 memory card slot and a HDMI port for easy connection to a larger monitor or big screen TV for video viewing.
Finally the Chromebook comes with a useful full size Chrome style keyboard with an over size and fully clickable track pad!
Price is expected to start at $349 at Amazon and Best Buy, this is similar to the Samsung version of the Chromebook it will become available on the 15th June.
