Netbooks are looking more like laptops every day. Take Acer’s latest offering, the Acer Aspire 751 as an example. What we have here is a pretty standard Netbook in terms of specs and functionality but Acer have now given us an 11.6 inch screen and a full sized keyboard as well as a good sized touch pad to go along with it. That’s progress.
When Netbooks first appeared about two years ago, what we had were tiny little 7 inch screens so the devices were more of a gimmick than anything we could actually put to good use.
And the gimmick was incredibly successful as we’ve been obsessed with Netbooks ever since. Producers have attempted to cash in on our insatiable desire for these ultra portable devices by bombarding us with new Netbooks week after week. It’s a wonder we aren’t sick of them.
Now though, we’ve at least got over the initial novelty provided by Netbooks and are demanding more functionality from them, we want something that is serious and that doesn’t look more like a kid’s toy than any sort of usable device.
The Netbooks we see these days have come a long way as producers have had to adapt their designs in order to compete in a highly competitive environment. What we are starting to see now are Netbooks with screen sizes the same as entry level Laptops but which are still very much Netbooks at heart, just like the Aspire 751.
No longer do we want to jab our Netbook keyboards with our index finger in order to produce text, or squint our eyes to see anything on the equally tiny screen, Netbooks are devices that we need to use comfortably and even though they are not quite laptops, we still want to put them to good use and we do.
Netbooks are popular quite simply because they are ideal for just about everyone. They are easily transportable and offer quick access to the Internet and allow us to be entertained and to keep in touch with others whilst on the road or out and about.
The Aspire 751 adds to Acers other Aspire One models which look more like Netbooks and come with a Netbook standard of an 8.9 inch or a 10.1 inch display screen.
