[...] the original: Acer Aspire 5517 Laptops Specification Tags: athlon, premium, radeon, radeon-x1200-, soon-as-the, way-going Published by admin on [...]
This Acer Aspire 5517 is a really nice laptop. This is my first laptop and everything on this computer works perfectly fine. Battery life has at least a good 2-3 hours after a full charge. The network card’s range on this Acer is really nice. I could reach a hotspot at least 4 houses down with 1/5 bars. Keyboard feels good. It has many of the components from 2 USB’s, and the VGA port that I would say a standard laptop should have. It would be nice if it had more USB’s, an HDMI port for its HD screen, and a microfiber cloth for its glossy screen. This Acer Aspire 5517 has the basic components. Not a lot of things on this computer. Simple and easy to use laptop.
how do i use the webcam?
My Aspire 5517 didn’t come with a webcam sadly. I had to buy my webcam.
I dont know how to get it to work. when i bought it, the description said it included the webcam but when i try to use it and turn it on its doesnt show in imaging section of device manager or anywhere else. I’ve downloaded somethings to try and use it but it says that it doesnt exist. there is a lens
I also bought an Acer Aspire 5517, but it didn’t came with webcam and it has 160GB of memory(hard drive)
I am pretty sure the Acer Aspire 5517 came in 2 models. I bought the least expensive model, the one with 160GB HDD and no webcam.
yeah my new acer aspirw 5517 note book dosnt hace a webcam either
How do I turn on Wifi ?
It’s to the right of the power button
quero saber onde posso encontrar manual do ACER aspire 5517 em portugues e os driver para windows xp
I just got one of these and there’s a lens on mine for a webcam but nothing shows in device manager so I don’t think it was installed in mine. I also have the 160gb hard drive but I have Mobility Radeon HD3200 graphics and not X1200. I got mine at Best Buy. I know some manufacturers do custom configurations for different retailers. I’d rather have the better graphics and less hard drive because I can upgrade the hard drive, the graphics are permanent. The absence of the webcam is a bummer, though.
Mine has a webcam but I don’t know how to use it can you help me please
Try this, click on your Start button and there should be a Start Search bar, and type down “webcam”. If that don’t work try this—>

I also got a brand new Acer Aspire 5517, then I noticed some differences between my notebook and what I’ve found on the web after some research, so I want to share this and hope to help someone out there.
For those that make comments about having webcam or not, or 160 GB vs. 250 GB hard drives, here is the deal from where I have found, there are at least two different versions of this notebook, both from Acer, but if you look at your exact model one is 5517-5700 while the other one is 5517-5997, the difference is on hard drive size, type of ATI graphics, and whether it has webcam or not.
The Acer Aspire 5517-5700:
ATI Radeon™ Xpress 1200 graphics
250 GB hard drive
Webcam
Acer Aspire 5517-5997:
ATI Radeon™ HD 3200 graphics
160 GB hard drive
No webcam
Me again from comment above. I have been doing some researching and it seems that the CPU may be upgradeable in these! A lot of people have been opening up 5516’s and replacing the TF-20 with TL family Turion 64 x2’s. Assuming the CPU in the 5517 is also socketed, then getting a dual core in these shouldn’t be too hard as long as it’s a TL Turion. Later model Turions like the RM series use a slightly different socket so they won’t work if the socket is the same as the 5516. The really good news is that you can get a TL-50 Turion X2 1.6ghz for $10 or less on ebay and substantially boost your benchmarks. Faster chips up to the 2.4ghz TL-68 are more expensive, but you get the most bang for the buck with the TL-50.
Oh S*it! Well on my free time i’ll open mine to see. I know its risky but to see if it’s true better open mine up.
How come that they will release a model number that;s not complete like your
saying their is a Acer Aspire 5517-5700: And Acer Aspire 5517-5997: i just bought but the Model of mine is Acer 5517 only.
Hola necesito el driver de la acer aspire 5517 el de wifi para xp!
I need driver to wifi aspire 5517 plz!
PCtech, I just saw this today that on the bottom of the laptop. It should read either 5517-5700 or 5517-5997. Mine reads 5517-5997.
But Fernando, I don’t think you need a driver for your Wi-Fi. It should come with the driver already. But if it didn’t, I just found a site if you needed it.

@PCtech
Please loo under your notebook, there is a label that should say either 5517-5700 or 5517-5997 as I said on my original post. I am no genius, nor an expert but just been in the field for the past 30 years or so, but anyway it doesn’t take a rocket engineer to search on the web for Acer Aspire 5517 and you’ll find out as I did, that there are two models as I specified on my original comment. Again, look under your notebook, mine has a sticker that says very clear 5517-5997, and it is the one that comes with a 160 GB HD, Radeon HD 3200 graphics, and no webcam nor microphone, I don’t know if the 5517-5700 comes with a built-in webcam, I think it does, not sure though. – My original post was to just clarify doubts to those that are were (are) confused about why some models of the same notebook come with a 250 GB and another with 160 GB HD and why some have webcam and others don’t, that’s the reason, there are two different sub-models if we can call it that way. I would have prefered to have the bigger HD (250 GB), the webcam, and the Radeon HD 3200 graphics all together on the same model..
Everyone has a question and a doubt. Mine is, has anyone found a battery replacement for the Acer Aspire 5517 ? I have looked all over the web for 2-3 days and found nothing, either these notebooks are relatively new and the resellers don’t have the battery, or maybe there is battery from another model that would fit well on the Acer Aspire 5517 ? Anyone knows where to get one other than calling Acer and spend a fortune on a battery?
I have never owned a laptop and just purchased the 5517-5997. Can anyone tell me what I need to do to connect to the internet? Do I need to purchase a card from a cell phone company? This is all new to me and I have no idea how to use the internet. I did connect through the ethernet cord while I was at a hotel, but don’t want to pay those charges each time. Please help.
If there is a wireless hot-spot in the hotel, you can connect to the internet wireless. Well here are instructions to connect to the internet.
1. Click on the start menu at the bottom left corner.
2. Click on (Control Panel)
3. Click on (Network and Internet)
4. Click on (Connect to a network)
This thing should show up and it should give a list of wireless connections around you. But if it says something like you need to turn on the wireless button, the button should be at the right of the power button.
I’m still looking for a spare battery for my Acer Aspire 5517-5597……Anyone out there knows where to find one? I have looked all over the web for days, and can’t find an exact replacement for the battery by doing a search on Acer Aspire 5517, not even looking for “Acer Aspire 5510 series”….they all come out to be for other models not exactly the 5517. Maybe there is another battery model that would fit perfectly on the Aspire 5517, that would be fine to me, I just don’t know what exact other model would be the right one. Anyone out there bought a replacement battery for this particular Acer Aspire 5517 model ? I know the factory might sell me one for sure, even though I haven’t contacted Acer, but I am also sure the price will be ridiculously high, so I would prefer to buy anywhere else but the factory. Please let me know where could I buy battery, or which model is out there that would exactly fit as the original Aspire 5517 battery. Thank you.
@ Scottie
If you mean that you want to use mobile broadband, you’ll have to find a service that provides a USB stick to connect to their network as there is no PC Card or Express Card slot included. I know there are adapters for both types of slots that plug into a USB port, but I’m not sure how or even if they would work with a mobile broadband card designed for such slots.
can you help me , can i dd webcam to my Acer Aspire 5517-5997 there seem to be a place for it , i was cheated by office debo they say to me it is 2 prosser it was single , and they say it comes with webcam but it did not , i want to add webcam as it came with it can i do that where do i buy it form ?
majed,
The 5517-5997 did not come with built in webcam. The 5517-5700 did. I am not certain it is even possible to add it after the fact. The fact that the two models come with different chipsets might indicate that two different motherboards were used and the one that did not come with a webcam may not have a connection for it. It would be a complicated process to add one even if it were possible. You would have to be proficient at taking your laptop apart then reassembling it, which would probably also void your warranty. You would be better off to buy a webcam that clips on to the top of the screen frame and plugs into a USB port. You’ll be able to choose a much higher quality cam that way.
I just got an Acer Aspire 5517-11208, has a built-in webcam. But, apparently, it DOES NOT also have a built-in microphone. Since I wanted the webcam for Skype, not having the microphone TOTALLY defeats the purpose of having a built-in webcam.
Can anyone help?
Am I missing something, that I need to do or “turn on” to get a built-in microphone working?
I bought the 5517-5997 (160Gig, HD3200) (Walmart) for my son so he can play small games (mainly Mame games) and we can have a basic Internet Laptop around the house, rather than go upstairs to the desktop all the time. So far, it does basic functions very well especially for the price. (under 400 bucks)
The AMD TF-20 1.6Ghz processor (65nm 15 watts) is a pretty good little cpu.
I too did some research with regards to upgrading the CPU eventually and know for a fact that the TK-42 dual core AMD 1.6GHz CPU is compatible with it. The bad news is, the TK-42 is not a retail box cpu and AMD
only ships these processors to companies like ACER, Gateway, Dell, HP etc.
Does anyone know for fact, if this particular laptop supports any AMD (dual core) store bought “box” processor? I am assuming since the TK-42 is 20watts and the TF-20 is 15 watts, then it would be a good
idea to look into the range of 30watt or less CPUs.
If anyone can answer my compatible CPU question, it would be greatly appreciated.
BTW, I e-mailed ACER many times and they never provided me with my answer. It always comes down to
“you should not upgrade this CPU, your laptop is under warranty blah blah blah”
Anyone have a problem with the curser jumping around during word processing?
thanks.
Could you be inadvertently touching the touchpad?
I have been carefully trying to observe that, and I don’t think so. I’m posting to see if this is a pattern, or, if it really is just me???
i bought one too, good laptop
Hi Guys,
There is another model(5517-1643) at Staples I got yesterday for 349.98 plus tax.
The spec are:
Amd Athlon 64 x2 1.6G w/ 1mb L2
3 GB ram
ATI Radeon HD3200
250GB hard drive
Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit installed
5 in 1 card reader
So check this one out. It works great for what I need.
can i purcahse webcam to be bulid in and instaill it on my pc? i have 5517-5997 it did not come with webcam but there seem a connection for it and place any one know , ?
thank you joe for all your help .
i would like to know if this acer 5517 has a microphone built in?
Well I can tell you that the 5517-1208 does not. Which makes NO SENSE, since it has a built-in webcam. Unless it’s designed for deaf people to use Skype.
@Zach
The microphone is a little tiny hole to the left side of the webcam, both on top of the laptop lid.
My 55517-5595 doesn’t have the microphone nor webcam, but I’ve seen the other ones at the store and there is usually a tiny hole close to where the webcam lens is, that is your microphone. Do you have a webcam on yours? Be glad if you do, at least mine doesn’t have any, and I am happy with my laptop. I only paid $299 at CompUSA, a few weeks ago they put them on sale for $299 only 5 laptops per store, and I was the lucky one to get the last one of the five, they were sold in less then 20-25 mins. as hot bread right after they opened the store in the morning. At least me, I don’t worry much about not having a webcam or microphone, I got a nice Plantronics headset and a USB Intel webcam that could connect to laptop in case I would ever need it, but of course I do understand it’s nice to have them right there on the laptop already, it just doesn’t bother me much. Considering the price I paid for this laptop I’m more than glad the way it is. I just wish it had a dual-core CPU, 4 GB of RAM, a 64-bit O.S., and a bigger hard drive, but I can’t upgrade those later on. I’m thinking of the AMD Athlon x64 TK-42 it’s a nice dual-core candidate, the Athlon 64 TF-20 that comes with the laptop draws 15 Watts of power, while the TK-42 20 Watts, being a dual-core, it isn’t much difference in power draw, battery should last about the same yet I’ll end up having a dual-core CPU that makes quite a fairly big difference compared to a single-core.
I apologize for my “speech”…
Well, as I said, mine, 5517-1208, does NOT have a built-in mic. No hole like that anywhere, does not show up in SOUNDS or in DEV MGR.
Will someone take the initiative and sue Acer for completely misguiding about inbuilt webcam on aspire 5517?
Sam,
The real problem isn’t Acer, it’s the retailers. They quote the wrong set of specifications in their ads. Many quote the 5517-5700 specs when they are selling the 5517-5997. Best Buy was quoting the 5517-5700 specs on the website but the 5517-5997 specs in the store when I bought mine.
I bought the laptop from a rent to own store and it didn’t come with any manual so I am forced to ask in more detail what Stacie was trying to ask. Is the laptop setup to be blue tooth compatible or will I need to buy a USB adapter?
Rob,
As far as the 5517-5997 model goes, no Bluetooth. As soon as I found out there were two different models of this laptop I went to device manager to see what devices were present and did not see any mention of a Bluetooth adapter there. As far as the other model, the 5517-5700, I don’t have one of those so all I can say is that the specifications I’ve seen at Acer and elsewhere say no built in Bluetooth on that model, either.
Yes, but it is Acer’s fault to release one without a built-in mic.
Keep in mind that not necessarily a laptop has to come with a webcam, not even a microphone.
Expecting to buy a laptop because it has to have a webcam and/or microphone, is like saying that all cars have to come with a GPS or a Coca-Cola dispenser or a freezer for your siix-pack of beers.
All Acer Aspire One seem to come with a webcam and a microphone, but we are here discussing the Acer Aspire 5517 notebook which is a totally different animal than the Acer Aspire One netbooks.
You don’t get it. The Acer I bought is an Aspire 5517, submodel 1208. And one of the features they advertised about it was that it had a built-in Webcam, and they even went as far as saying “for video-chatting”. So, in this case, it is very reasonable to expect that it would have also had the built-in mic, without specifically having to look for that. Especially since I also own a now 2 year old Asprie 5100, which does NOT have a built-in Webcam, yet it even has a built-in Mic.
My point is, who in their right mind, would design a model, include a webcam in that model, but then not include a mic. I can actually see some functionality in having a mic, but no webcam. Maybe you’ll want to use it for voice recording or heck, you could even use it for Skype and just have a regular call over the internet, w/o video. But to have the webcam and no mic, well that’s just pointless and STUPID!
A friend of mine says they probably screwed up when they designed it, (and forgot to include the mic) and that’s why they’re selling at a pretty good price. $419 for 4GB, 320GB HDD is pretty low.
I too purchased an Aspire 5517-1643 from Staples. I have three questions. 1)Does the Wireless LAN button mean that if I’m in an area where there is WiFi I will be able to access the net without purchasing anything additional, like an antenna? Please forgive my ignorance with respect to WiFi. I’ve heard of it but have never used it. 2) How can I locate ‘hot spots’? 3)The battery supplied with the Aspire is good for two and a half hours on a full charge. Is there a battery I can get (please be specific re: manufacturers and model numbers)that will give me more hours?
I agree that it’s ridiculous to have an installed webcam and speakers but no mic!
I just got my 5517-5535 – no microphone, even though the device manager shows a specific make and model, Realtek High definiton Audio but shows it as “not plugged in” and is greyed out.
I’m happy with everything else on this laptop but no microphone makes no sense at all!
I just opened up my new 5517-5597. I see comments about 5997 but I have the 5597. I have webcam and no mic (that I can see). There is NO mic in the notebook tour diagram of my manual for ANY 5517 model (weird). In any case, I just paid 399 for this bad boy and I gotta say, with Windows 7 alone worth 150, this laptop was an absolute steal. Very nice functionality, great looks and super quiet. As mentioned above, very plain, but who can complain at the price of a Netbook. I do wish there was a mic, and the lack of a PCMCIA slot is probably the single biggest disappointment. Still have to recommend to definitely buy this laptop if your in this market segment.
I too bought a 5517 however it is 5435…an other model…no Webcam…I bought one separatlly and made my MORN…
It crashed this week …rebooted…lost everything…but did not have much…i`m a ROOKY…so.
But still was disapointed ….the futur will tell !
I think with all of us ( so many too) we shoukjd have some kind of comp from ACER…an accessory or some thing ( credit…whatever !). They have our info, address etc…
That is, if they are a «Serious» co. We were when we bought it and trusted the info that was given us
ACER let us know if you are !
hi i barley bought this laptop && i cant figure how to connect to the webcam. i could connect to everytthing but the laptop! help me!
