A USB device for your Laptop that tells bugs to buzz off

No it isn’t a new concept in wireless anti virus protection, and it won’t stop your laptop from being infected with malicious software but if you love geeky gadgets you’re going to love this — USB mosquito repellent.

That’s the thing about mosquitoes; they just sneak in there uninvited, a bit like back door Trojans, actually.

They can detect your presence by your body odour from a distance of about 30 metres. And once they have their sights on you, you’re doomed, unless of course you have protection.

This is definitely a case where the female of the species is deadlier than the male. Anyone who has ever woken up covered in bites will know exactly what I’m talking about. The payload is quite severe.

Apart from the obvious discomfort associated with having your skin pierced and injected with venom (OK, saliva) our little female friend (male mosquitoes don’t drink blood), can transmit malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever and a whole host of other diseases.

So with a USB mosquito repellent all you have to do is plug the lightweight device, which looks like a flash drive, into one of your USB slots in your laptop and you’re safe.

You might protest that you don’t always have your laptop but what’s the point in having a laptop if you don’t take it with you wherever you go? That’s the whole idea isn’t it?

Yep, chances are that with or without your laptop you’re going to come across these beasts and their unwelcome advances at some point, so better safe than sorry.

The ultrasonic frequencies emitted by the innocent-looking device send the blood-sucking blighters well and truly on their way to their next unsuspecting victim — leaving you and your blood count intact. Well, that’s the general idea, anyway.

“No need to wear harmful chemicals and toxic sprays when you’ve got this mosquito beater! USB port powered gadget transmits a sonic repelling frequency and can provide clean living or office environment to its user” says the marketing blurb.

The device only has a range of about 1.5 square metres, but that’s good enough for me, personal space and all that. But would someone please tell me if it actually works?

The USB mosquito repellent is available from Uxsight for only $6.
