Greetings, friend!
I am rich foreign dignitary from country of Iranistan. I am want to give you million dollar if only help me! I need to secure my money in the US of A and to do that I first need you to give me your credit card number, bank account number and PIN, and give me too, your paypal number and password! THANK YOU FRIEND!
These emails are good for a laugh. In fact, when I get a really good one, I usually save it and show it to my friends. That we can get a big kick out of poorly written spam is small comfort when you have to wade through dozens of them to get through to the one or two emails you actually need.
Luckily, a lot of the free email clients out there already have great spam stoppers built in, but… not all do. And even the ones with great spam blockers, they’re not perfect.
And you know, if it’s not your email getting spam, it’s your messaging service or your Microsoft Exchange. So with that in mind, we give you three of the best free spam blockers.
POPfile
POPfile is one of the more popular spam blockers, and for good reason. It blocks around 98% of all spam, and it works on a wide database of known spam proxies and email addresses. It’s easy to use, and easy to configure, which is a nice change, as many spam blockers seem to have been designed for tech school graduates.
eXpurgate
eXpurgate is considered to be one of the most easy to use free spam filters. It can block spam pretty easily, and can scan for viruses. One problem some people have with eXpurgate, however, is the fact that it uses an extra email account, and then forwards the good mail to your primary account, which can be a bit of a hassle.
Spamhiliator
Another spam blocker that has become very popular for its ease of use. The program works on Bayesian filters and has a pretty good detection rate. Some users don’t really like that you can’t remotely teach or administer the program, but this shouldn’t be a problem for most users.
Whichever of these you go with, for most users, they should be just as effective as any paid program to kill spam. If not, they make a pretty good placeholder until you want to upgrade to something a little more powerful.
