SEO for Google

With the recent Google data center updates in the last couple of months, many people find their websites no longer have the high SERPs they had enjoyed prior to the latest Google update.

Just a small heads up, as I type this, Google is in the process of yet another major update.

“Holy Search Engine Optimization” some of my readers and RSS subscribers might be thinking. What shall I do now?

Have no fear, there are some common starting points that if you apply these to all of your sites, you should be able to see the listings you once did as the norm.

  • Proper naming structure
  • Name your page titles with your keywords if possible
  • Always have a sitemap
  • Always include a robots.txt file
  • If you must use a re-direct, be sure it’s server side, not with a meta refresh tag
  • Don’t use hidden text
  • Make sure your keyword phrase is included in your H1 tags
  • Don’t optimize for more than 2 keywords per page
  • Use text links where possible
  • In any image, be sure to use the alt tag (describe the image, don’t use keywords).
  • Use hyphens, not underscores when you name a page file
  • Make sure your site has an error handling page
  • Create a Google Sitemap and submit it to them (This is in addition to a typical sitemap)
  • Offload all your JavaScript and CSS code (make it all off page).
  • Don’t forget about meta tags

Be sure to follow these simple guidelines and you won’t need to worry too much anytime Google has an update.

Mozilla Patches Firefox Releases Version 2.0.0.6

Still battling vulnerabilities that could allow the Firefox browser to pass dangerous data to third-party applications like Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, Mozilla just released Firefox 2.0.0.6 to fix the problem.

The following security issues have been fixed:

  • MFSA 2007-27: Unescaped URIs passed to external programs
  • MFSA 2007-26: Privilege escalation through chrome-loaded about:blank windows

Be sure to go grab the latest version of Firefox to protect you against these security vulnerabilities.

Google Maps Mashup Shows Spam Sources In Real Time

This awesome Spam World Google Maps mashup shows where all that spam is coming from we receive on a daily basis:

Google Maps Spam Mashup

The site is updated every 15 minutes + or - from when you actually go and view it.

If you click on a marker, it will tell you how many IP’s are currently spamming from that zone. It’s sort of fascinating, in a geeky sort of way :)

MOSH Mobile: Head Banging on a Mobile Phone Near You

Yes, you read that title correctly. MOSH Mobile: mobile that kicks ass!

Apparently there is a new Mobile Virtual Network Operator moshing it’s was onto the scene as of Yesterday. Yep, they’re a brand new company in beta.

Taken from the official MOSH Mobile website:

MOSH mobile is the new FREE to use mobile service that let’s users make unlimited free calls, send and receive unlimited text messages, surf the web and much more.

You buy the phone on the cheap, we provide the service on the free.

We were founded by a group of guys and gals who are sick and tired of being hit with huge charges and thought couldn’t cellphone service be more fun… and more well free?

After spending some time poking around the Mosh web site, it seems to be sparse on some major details.

Here are a few questions I’d like some answers on:

Who its carrier partner is (Cingular/AT&T, Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile, etc.), what handsets it will offer, how any one is supposed to know someone to get an invite on a brand new service, who its backers are and what sort of contracts - if any - are required.

I’d also like to know do they plan to be a CDMA or GSM based provider…

I suppose as the days move forward, more information will be available and hey, they use Twitter, so you can watch for up-to-date news as they tweet it.

An Entire Book Written on a Nokia Mobile Phone

Apparently author Roberto Bernocco wrote an entire 384 page novel using only his Nokia 6630 cell phone.

In case you’re not familiar with that Nokia model, it doesn’t have a QWERTY keyboard.

He used T9 (which stands for “Text on 9 keys”) to write the entire thing, which took him just 17 weeks to complete.

The book, Compagni di viaggio, which translates to “Fellow Travelers” in English, was recently published thanks to Lulu.com, a cool website where anyone can publish their own books for print.

Now if I could only read Italian…
