Consumers OK With Illegal Movie Downloads

Napster Peer to PeerA total of 32 million Americans aged 12 or above have downloaded a full-length movie sometime in the past.

The majority of United States online consumers don’t believe downloading movies illegally from the internet is a very serious offense.

A recent study done by Solutions Research Group found that most consumers suffered from the “Robin Hood effect,” when it came to stealing copyrighted movies from online peer-to-peer networks like Napster and Limewire.

According to the study director Kaan Yigit:

Most people perceive celebrities and studios to be rich already, and as a result don’t think of movie downloading as a big deal.

Only four in 10 of the respondents believed downloading movies was a very serious offense, compared to nearly 60% who felt the same about parking in a fire lane.

Compare that to the brick-and-mortar scenario where almost 80% of respondents rated stealing a DVD from a store as a very serious offense.

Amsterdam To Get Statue To Honor Prostitutes

A Dutch prostitute in the red light district of AmsterdamApparently no one appreciates prostitutes enough!

Amsterdam will be the first place to let them know we appreciate their hard work.

Yes, for those of you wondering, this is a serious post. LOL.

Amsterdam’s red-light district will soon get a new attraction: a statue to honor prostitutes around the world.

The statue, designed by artist Els Rijerse, will likely be unveiled at the end of March, Dutch news agency ANP reported.

Mariska Majoor, a former prostitute who commissioned the statue, told ANP:

In many countries, prostitutes struggle and people have no respect for them whatsoever. The statue is meant to give all those men and women strength.

According to the ANP news report the statue, made of bronze, shows a woman who confidently looks out into the world.

This statue will be very interesting to see once it’s completed.

More On AT&T and Cingular

On January 16, 2007 I posted about Cingular becoming the new AT&T.

Thanks to my friend Felix, I have a great video to explain in a little more detail of exactly what’s taken place.

Ok, to recap, AT&T just bought Cingular and Cingular was already owned by AT&T. BellSouth owns who?!

Let Stephen Colbert from Comedy Central help you figure this out:

Did the video make your head spin? Can you name off all the companies that were mentioned in the video?

C’mon, strut your stuff by leaving a comment :)

Apple Confirms 802.11n Download Fee

Apple Inc. confirmed this morning that it will charge Mac users a small fee to switch on faster and longer-range wireless technology already tucked into their machines.

The company will charge customers $1.99 to download software that will enable 802.11n wireless functionality in the chipsets of most of its Intel Core 2 Duo- and Xeon-based computers.

Last week, when Apple announced its new AirPort Extreme wireless base station, it said the software would be included with the $179.00 USD device.

According to Apple spokesperson Teresa Brewer:

For those customers who wish to enable their 802.11n functionality but do not wish to buy a new Airport Extreme base station, we are making the software available for download from the Apple Online Store.

The enabling software will be posted to the Apple site for download when AirPort Extreme ships in early February 2007.

Teresa Brewer also said “Eventually the 802.11n software will be included with all new Macs that contain the appropriate hardware.”
